Solidarity in Action report by Shree Kantibhai Ghaghada (Treasurer, Gnati Federation), Jamnagar

Gold Association of Una called for an indefinite strike
Shops were shut down in order to demonstrate solidarity with the two of our Parajiya Soni goldsmiths who were arrested by the Una, Gujarat police accused for handing stolen goods. Shri Akhil Bharatiya Parajiya Soni Gnati Federation, a federation of 25 Parajiya Pattni Samajs also swung into action to support a strike call.

The incidence happened last week when two of our Goldsmiths in Una innocently purchased ornaments from a customer whom they knew well. During a police inquiry, it was found that these were stolen ornaments. The Una Police arrested both of our community goldsmiths for handing stolen properties.

Una Goldsmiths Association tried to intervene but without success. So the Association called for an indefinite strike. Shri Akhil Bharatiya Parajiya Soni Gnati Federation also got involved and made representation to the state ministers and the police authorities.

By law, as per government guidelines, Goldsmiths are not normally treated guilty even if they have handled stolen goods.

The shops remained closed for three days. Meanwhile the Una Goldsmiths Association, Parajiya Soni Gnati Gederation and the All India Suvarnkar Sangh are in consultation with the authorities and are following up the case and hope to resolve the mater satisfactorily.

Editor's note:-
This issue the Association’s involvement clearly shows how the strength of a Federation of our Pattni Samajs becomes useful. The federation deserves commendation for their work.
It would be nice if all the Parajiya Soni committees and us members around the world show their support and solidarity. Register your support. Send your e-mail to

Hindu Marriages in Kenya Officially Inspired Forced Marriages?

Fwd by Mahendrabhai Pattni, London.
This article highlights unacceptable practice adopted by the British High Commission (BHC) in Kenya

Subject: Hindu Marriages in Kenya, 4 January 2006
Dear All
My good friend Ramnik K D Shah (RKD) recently informed me of disturbing developments in Kenya, which may affect those of us, who got married in Kenya under a Hindu Wedding Ceremony.
I could do no better than send you an article written by RKD which has just been published.
I would suggest that you draw the attention of others and in particular
leaders of our communities in Kenya as well as here.
Regards
Ramesh Shah
