Once again this year SONI SAMAJ is pleased to announce that the MAKKER SANKRANT celebration along with the picnic event DESERT SAFARI 2010 was a grand success. This has only been possible with contribution and cooperation brought in from the members all over the U.A.E.

Makker Sankranti

Makker Sankranti is basically a festival when people in all over India and Indians abroad have these colorful kites which they fly as high as they can using a special thread made for this festival also known as the MAANJHA, which is made by materials using glass powder and special cotton in India. So people enjoy the festival with full charm and flying many varieties of kites. (For more reading click Makar Sankranti )

Now lets get back to all the excitement about this festival and the picnic that took place over here in the U.A.E. on 15 January 2010.

More than 500 from the age group of 1 month to 93 year old took part in the event that took place from 12.00pm onwards till 9.30pm.

Members enjoyed themselves taking part in various activities in the camp starting from the kite flying festival and then the dune bashing, buggy riding, and many more such fun filled activities. The atmosphere in camp was very homely as members intermingled and having fun.

While the above activities were going on, the samaj officials and volunteers started serving snacks and starters of delicious and traditional Gujarati food items like bhajiya, gaathiyaa and thepla along the festival sweets which include mamra laddu, dates, chikki and other items.

After all this exciting activities all the members were tired and wanted to relax while not missing the fun so the samaj officials called out to play the very famous game bingo. All the members participated and many won prizes. It followed by a raffle draw where the grand first prize was the return air ticket from Dubai-Mumbai which was sponsored by the famous global airliner JET AIRWAYS. Their contribution has been very valuable for the success of this event.

It was now time for everyone to have the specially made traditional Gujarati style dinner with normal main course of special Baingan Bhartha (Ringna no Oro), with Bajra na rotla & ghauni Bhakhri plus our regular very delicious menu in including starter Houmous, Salad, & in main menu Veg Manchurian, Alu Mutter, Paneer butter masala, Channa masala with tandoori roti along with desert items the very famous sweet gulab jamun and fresh fruits.

A dessert safari is not complete unless there is a belly dancing! The show was enjoyed by members where the beautiful belly dancer showed off her traditional Arabic dancing form and entertained the crowd very well.

Finally to conclude on the note that we had a great picnic experience along with the kite festival celebration with all the members while sharing the message love and happiness among everyone in the community.
