Mombasa Samaj History

It was Thursday, 10th June 1937 when our Samaj was inaugurated. The first chairperson elected was Shree Parmanandbhai Dosa and the secretary was Shree Hirjibhai Lakha.

Another stepping-stone of our Samaj was when 60 years ago, Motiben Parajia Pattni Soni Samaj building was formally opened on the auspicious day Saturday 2nd August 1952 with pomp and fanfare by Shree Kanjibhai Meghji family.

Mombasa Samaj being the first Parajia Pattni Samaj outside India has passed through many reputed leaders. In its heydays our Samaj reached a membership of over a thousand.

Due to our Pattni /Soni families migrating to greener pastures to date, we have now a tiny membership of 16 families compromising of only 75 members.  The scenario now is like one big family and can proudly say unity is paramount amongst us members.

Pranbhai who is originally from Mombasa and had returned home after 40 years was warmly welcomed. He has become a well known face among the Parajiya Pattni Community who has managed to bring the whole Pattni community together under one umbrella with the Pattni Connection website. After introducing Pranbhai, Secretary Ajay then called the Chairman Bharatbhai to address the gathering.

Chairman Bharatbhai Bhimji Ratanshi

Chairman Bharatbhai in his welcome speech gave a short history of Shree Mombasa Parajia Soni Samaj history.

“On this happy occasion celebrating the twin jubilees,” he said, “he was honoured to be the chairman of the Samaj”.

Secretary Bhasker Narottambhai Pattni, Pattni Brotherhood

Rushay then invited the Secretary of Pattni Brotherhood, Nairobi, Bhasker Narottambhai Pattni to address the community. Bhaskerbhai made an important point that our community does not have a Samaj property in either UK or in UAE. The two big assets that our community owns outside India are the two properties - one in Nairobi and the Mombasa Samaj. He stressed that both these Samaj properties should not rely on mere donations but have an income to be self sufficient.

Nairobi with his new dynamic committee has ensured that it generates enough income that it now has a surplus. He appealed to community to support the Mombasa Samaj to complete their project to build the mini shopping complex.

Treasurer, Rajendra Jayantilal Thadeswar

Rajendrabhai Jayantilal Thadeshwer (Hon. Treasurer), gave details of the construction of the shopping complex.

There will be six shops in the complex. He gave details of the breakdown of the cost. The aim of these shops is to generate a steady income for the Samaj.

The master of ceremony, Rushay then invited the chief guest for the evening Mr Pranlalbhai Dhanak to address on this historic twin anniversaries of Diamond & Platinum Jubilee of our Samaj.

Keynote speech by chief guest Pranlal Chhaganbhai Arjan Dhanak

Pranbhai thanked the Mombasa Samaj committee for the inviting him to the Dinner Party to celebrate the Samaj’s twin celebrations.

“I feel honored by the invitation you have extended to me to be your Chief Guest” Pranbhai said in his keynote address.

He then took the Samaj members and guests down memory lane with a brief history of the Mombasa Parajia Pattni Samaj.

As we were celebrating Mombasa Samaj’s twin jubilees, Pranbhai in his keynote speech recalled early years when Mombasa Samaj used to have a population of around 1000 members.

A passion about serving the Samaj comes by following the footsteps of the elders. He recalled his childhood memories when Pranbhai and other Pattni school children who used to attend Samaj meetings. Gopaldas Ranchodbhai Dhanak at the time was the Chairman.

Pranbhai recalled his early years when the activities of the Samaj elders inspired the youths to form the first ever Parajiya Pattni Youth Club where Pranbhai served as the Secretary.

In UK, he served the PPA National committee in the 1983 committee. In 2003, he was appointed by the PPA London Region committee as the Editor for the community newsletter - “Pattni News".

This website within the last 7 years has managed to bring the Pattni members from all corners of the world together. The website also played an important role in organising the first ever World Gathering at Dwarka.
