Choghadhiu
Pran C. Arjan - Editor
There is always a need to look up the "Choghadhiu" when hosting a programme or when having a special function in the family like an engagement or wedding.
The Indian Calendar has details but one always has to find it and have someone interpret the results as the choghadhiu changes every 1.5 hours during the day and night!
To make life easier, we have uploaded a simple Choghadhiu Guide
The details of the Choghadhiu were taken from the Panchang. So what is a Panchang?
Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, ancient Indian scholars devised a comprehensive calendar based on the studies of Veda and the movement of planetary bodies and stars. People of
Panchang means the five members, because it contains five leading subjects:
1. The age of the moon in the month;
2. The constellation near which the moon is situated on each particular day;
3. The day of the week;
4. The eclipses;
5. The positions of the planets.
This calendar covers everything from the phases of the moon, the positions of the stars and planets, and identifies auspicious time and day for various activities.
An important function of Panchang is to help calculate muhurat. Muhurat is a listing of auspicious days and times to undertake important activities in either personal life or business. Auspicious and inauspicious days are also indicated.
This information is an absolute necessity for every pandit or a hindu priest, since it tells him not only which are the auspicious constellations and auspicious or inauspicious days, but also which are the suitable hours in each day for it is only at these particular moments that the ceremonies is called on to preside can begin.
Starting any new venture on the appropriate tithi will fetch lots of wealth and prosperity for the person. Similarly, any deed done on the right day of the week will enhance the longevity, i.e the life span of the person.
Any deed done on a day with a good and beneficial star will alleviate the sins (ill effects because of ill deeds), will help all diseases to disappear.
Lastly, it will help the person to achieve the objective of the deed without any hurdles and impediments.
The Week – How it is identified with Gods
The Panchang lists four weeks of seven days, identified with planets and gods. They are:
1. Somvar (Monday) identified with moon and dedicated to Lord Shiva.
2. Mangalwar (Tuesday) identified with Mars and dedicated to Hanuman and Ganapati.
3. Budhwar (Wednesady) identified with Mercury and dedicated to Lord Krishna.
4. Guruvar (Thursday) identified with Jupiter and dedicated to Dattaguru and Lord Vishnu.
5. Shukravar (Friday) identified with Venus and dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi.
6. Shanivar (Saturday) identified with Saturn and dedicated to Hanuman.
7. Ravivar (Sunday) identifies with Sun and is dedicated to Surya.

Pancha'ang: astrology definition:
Five limbs comprise: VAAR[DINA] - day, TITHI event, NAKSHATTARA constellation, YOGG type of chaugadia/mahurut based on RASHI, finally the KARANA effect or cause on karma to the specific CHALIT and RASHI and NAVAMSHA chalit kundali.
Having given several conferences on this issue to Brahmins because they get so confused and frustrated with the panch'ang interpretations by the non-novice and those claiming to know it and which particular pancha'ang to follow as a result of the divisions created within the HINDU community.
Authetic pancha'ang comes from
Any chaughadia converted to GMT will have to be viewed at the ephemeris astrology time of GMT - not indian time.
Generally, a day is divided into 8 parts of 1 hrs & 30 mins. each. The first part starting with the Sun Rise on that day and last part ending on Sun Set on that day approximately for the Day Times. Similarly, there are 8 parts starting with Sun Set of current day and ending till Sun Rise Next Day. There are 7 types/grades of time periods of which four are auspicious (Amrit, Subh, Labh, Chanchal) and three are inauspicious (Rog / Kal / Udwegh). Indian Astrologers suggest that works that are undertaken in the auspecious periods generally have a positive result and those doen is the inauspecious period have a negative result. However, the outcome is also dependent on several other factors. The Chogadia for today is as follows:
